Stand at a natural break in Cumberland Mountain that became one of the Appalachians’ defining travel corridors. Indigenous peoples used the gap for hunting, trade, and settlement long before the Wilderness Road carried roughly 200,000–300,000 European-American settlers west; during the Civil War, both armies competed for control of this strategic passage.

The visitor-center core is directly off US 25E. Current NPS material identifies bus parking at the visitor-center lot, and RVs/camp trailers are permitted through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel. This is the universal vehicle core.
Current-condition note: Primary roads are normally available year-round; severe weather can affect park facilities and secondary roads.
Developed campground with electric and non-electric loops, dump/fill facilities, showers and site-specific rig lengths. Larger powered/towed classes are conditional on reserving a site that fits.
Current-condition note: Some loops close seasonally in winter and temporary severe-weather closures may occur.
Optional access zone only. Current 2026 NPS compendium prohibits vehicles 20 ft or longer and vehicles pulling trailers. Do not imply that large rigs can drive to Pinnacle Overlook.
