Follow a river that flows almost entirely atop Lookout Mountain before cutting Alabama’s deepest canyon. Sheer sandstone walls, waterfalls, unusually high water quality, rare species, and serious whitewater and climbing make the canyon far more than a roadside overlook.
No camping inside the preserve. Use nearby developed campgrounds outside the NPS boundary; check current availability, rig fit and route suitability.

This is the universal full-spectrum core and should serve as the primary destination anchor. Camping is not allowed in the preserve.
Current-condition note: The lot can fill by late morning on busy warm-season weekends and may temporarily close until spaces open.

The preserve's full-spectrum vehicle anchor, with a 100-car lot that includes RV/bus spaces and an accessible boardwalk to the falls.

Series of overlooks above sandstone canyon walls; best treated as a smaller-vehicle optional drive because NPS does not recommend RVs or trailers on the Rim Parkway.

Developed river-access day-use area with paved parking, restrooms and an easy one-mile riverside trail; approach from AL-273 rather than the restricted road below Eberhart Point.
WORTH THE DETOUR
A locally owned Fort Payne restaurant, bar and live-music venue inside the historic Big Mill building. It adds downtown history and local culture to a destination otherwise dominated by canyon overlooks and waterfalls.
