Follow the New River through the Appalachians’ deepest and longest gorge, where a river that predates the current mountains cut downward as they rose. The gorge later exposed coal-bearing rock that drew railroads, mines, towns, and bridges; today the same terrain supports whitewater, climbing, hiking, and scenic driving.
In-park camping is primitive and not suited to large RVs; large rigs should use developed campgrounds outside the park. Canyon Rim and Grandview remain the full-spectrum day-use anchors.
